Ok, I've been researching this and I keep finding the same answer. I checked two guitars made by fender five years a part.
Every article I read says that on fender amps after 1989, the 2 letters at the beginning of the serial number denote the year and the month (respectively). Now that seems firm to me untill I checked othe dates and found the Euro way of dating puts the day then the month. The older was dated the usa way, the newer the euro way.
Remember, many components could have been changed over the years, speakers blow, caps dry out, transformers melt down, and pots wear out.
